The Secretary-Treasurer is the union's chief financial officer and serves local unions, state affiliates, officers, and members in many ways.
The Secretary-Treasurer seeks to increase union revenue by encouraging non-members to join, and is responsible for the collection and proper disbursement of union funds. The Secretary-Treasurer's Department offers in-depth training to local and state union officers who have financial responsibilities for their organizations.
We also provide training on how to conduct local and state union elections, consistent with the rules of the U.S. Department of Labor and the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act.
The Secretary-Treasurer's Department is responsible for interpreting the APWU National Constitution and Bylaws. The department assists local unions and state affiliates by reviewing their constitutions and bylaws and alerting them to any violations of the law or conflicts with the APWU Constitution and Bylaws.
We provide many benefit programs as well. Looking for a credit card? Buying a house? Sending a child to college? The union offers services to our members through Union Plus, a program endorsed by the AFL-CIO. The Secretary-Treasurer's Department also administers a college scholarship competition in which high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of APWU members are eligible to participate.
The Secretary-Treasurer's office serves as the liaison to the APWU's Deaf/Hard of Hearing Task Force, which makes recommendations to the national union on issues facing deaf workers and their families.
