APWU Private Sector Members Ratify Contract
October 1, 2019
On August 26, 2019 APWU private sector members ratified the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the Des Moines Area Local and their employer, Mail Contractors of America.
The new terms of the agreement between APWU and the company will provide guaranteed hours for extra board drivers - relief drivers who cover vacant routes.
The CBA includes an increase in pay for unanticipated routes outside of a driver’s normal area, extra work performed, unexpected lay-overs, non-mail haul work, and rescue runs.
The new terms also provide for the option to carry-over additional vacation or holiday hours from the previous year. The terms of this agreement will expire June 30, 2023.
Support Services Director, Steve Brooks, said, "The negotiation team, comprised of drivers from the Kansas City and Des Moines units, as well as Des Moines Area local, Mike Bates, stuck together and rejected the numerous give backs the Company proposed. We were able to retain the rights we have achieved over the years, and increase their benefits and compensation."
