Help Homeless Veterans: Contribute to Winterhaven Stand Down
November 15, 2010
Every year, at least one million homeless veterans sleep in bus terminals, over steam grates, huddled on park benches, and under overpasses to avoid the harsh winter elements.
APWU members are encouraged to show their gratitude to the men and women who served this country by contributing to the 2011 Winterhaven Stand Down. This will be the fourth consecutive year the union has participated in the Veterans Administration’s event to assist the needy. This year’s program will take place on Jan. 22, 2011.
APWU state and local organizations are encouraged to donate clothing and non-perishable items to the national campaign. The union’s Human Relations Department has created a “Backpack Wish List” to guide members who wish to participate. All food and hygiene items, which must be new and in manufacturer-sealed packages, must be received by Jan. 15.
Filled backpacks should be mailed to APWU Human Relations Department, 1300 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20005.
There are also a multitude of Stand Downs that occur throughout the country, at various times of the year. Local and state organizations are encouraged to donate at least one filled backpack to the national program, and participate in any local events as well. Members who locate a Stand Down that occurs in their area should contact the designated local event coordinator to arrange for the APWU’s inclusion in the event.
A list of Stand Downs that occurred in 2010 may be used as a guide when planning participation; events generally recur in the same location and around the same time each year. Locals should use the sample flyer to engage members in their efforts.
No American veteran should be sleeping on our nation’s streets. Please donate filled, new backpacks to these courageous men and women.
