USPS Assailed for Airing Ads During Bigot’s TV Broadcasts

APWU President William Burrus has asked the Postal Service to join with other responsible companies and withdraw sponsorship of an offensive nightly TV offering, “The Glenn Beck Program.”
“Glenn Beck has made a number of offensive statements on his nightly show that I believe are designed to promote racial animosity,” Burrus wrote in a letter to Postmaster General John E. Potter on Aug. 19 The union president noted that Beck recently said that President Obama “has a deep-seated hatred for white people.”
“The seed of hatred and bigotry grows when it is unchallenged,” Burrus wrote, saying that he was disappointed that the USPS continues to air commercials during the Fox News Channel show. “Other companies, including RadioShack, Men’s Wearhouse, State Farm Insurance, and Proctor & Gamble, have cancelled advertisements on Fox or transferred sponsorship to other programs.”
“Beck’s vile message must not be endorsed by the United States Postal Service through a continuing affiliation,” Burrus wrote. “An ongoing relationship will undoubtedly be interpreted as an endorsement of Beck’s despicable remarks.”
“On behalf of APWU members — your employees — I urge you in the strongest possible terms to disaffiliate our institution from this program.”
