Support the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive on May 9
May 5, 2015
The American Postal Workers Union endorses the 23rd annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive, taking place Saturday, May 9.
“I urge every APWU member to make a generous donation,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “Unions are based on a spirit of generosity – in support of each other and our communities. Far too many people go to bed hungry. Let’s pitch in and do what we can to ‘Stamp Out Hunger’.”
The concept is simple: Postal customers across the country are asked to put non-perishable food donations in a sturdy bag and place the bag near their mailbox prior to their regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 9. Letter Carriers will collect the donations as they deliver mail.
During the winter holiday season, food banks and shelters usually benefit from an upswing in charitable donations, the NALC notes. By springtime, however, their stocks tend to dwindle to critically low levels.
Last year, with the help of thousands of volunteers, letter carriers collected 73 million pounds of non-perishable food.
“Thanks to that generosity since the national drive began in 1992, letter carriers have picked up and delivered to local food banks more than 1.3 billion pounds of food,” said NALC President Frederic Rolando.
