Celebrating the Women of the APWU
February 17, 2010
In honor of the countless contributions that the women of the APWU make to their union, to the labor movement, and to their families, the National Executive Board has adopted a resolution designating March as “Women’s History Month.”
“Each year, we celebrate the accomplishments of women both at home and in the workplace,” said Secretary-Treasurer Liz Powell.
The resolution, which was adopted by the board in December, recognizes women’s roles in the union and the rights they have fought for. “Women have played and continue to play a critical role in the labor movement,” the proclamation states.
The women of the APWU play an integral role in organization, serving their locals, state organizations, and the national union as officers and rank-and-file activists. Women “have been at the forefront of every major progressive movement for social change,” the proclamation notes, and have also been instrumental in the fight for the Family and Medical Leave Act, and other accomplishments that benefit all working people.
Throughout the month of March, members are encouraged to recognize women’s roles in the union and at home, as well as the progress the union has made in helping working families.
“We are asking union activists to recognize the contributions that the union has made in improving the workplace and helping women’s success at work and in the family,” Powell said.
